Always
on Saturday
Always on Saturday is a nationally recognized teen pregnancy prevention
program operating in Hartford’s neighborhoods since 1986. Always on Saturday gives youth the skills they need to delay parenthood until they are
emotionally and financially able to care for a child, helping them develop positive directions and goals.
Always on Saturday meets every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. during the school year at locations throughout the city. Sites are conveniently located
within walking distance of many neighborhoods. There are separate programs for boys and girls ages 9-13 and 14-18. A nutritious lunch is provided.
The programs are led by professional adult facilitators who are experienced in working with youth.
Topics include skill-building exercises, self-esteem
development and group discussions on such issues as sexual development, healthy relationships and responsibility. Field trips and special events supplement the weekly programs.
Facilitators-in-Training
Facilitators-in-Training is a leadership development component which builds additional skills and gives youth the opportunity to serve
as peer role models for younger group members. Associate facilitators also serve as community youth ambassadors for the program.
Community Service
This component seeks to build stronger connections between youth participants and their neighborhoods by encouraging active
community service. Participants engage in projects to address societal issues and concerns as identified by the group — furthering
their leadership skills.
